Another Science Slam was held in St. Petersburg, where St. Petersburg residents could listen to a lecture on metagenomics, learn about new methods of cancer treatment and expand their vocabulary.

On Sunday, July 20, the sixth Science Slam took place at the A2 club. Its permanent organizers are the Bumaga Internet newspaper and the JetBrains company.

Science Slam is a kind of "battle" of young scientists. The format is a ten-minute performance on the club's stage. Five researchers should interest and captivate even an ignorant listener with a story about their scientific achievements, and the best slammer is determined by audience applause.

The invited speaker was Alla Lapidus, PhD in Molecular Biology, Chief Researcher at the Center for Genomic Bioinformatics, St. Petersburg State University. An expert in metagenomics, she recalled that everyone sitting in the hall differs from his neighbor in his set of microorganisms; how important it is for the baby to be born naturally, and not by caesarean section; how termites can become an alternative energy source.

Gorbacheva made a presentation “New methods of cancer treatment: heat shock proteins”. Putting experiments on mice for six months, the scientist confidently declares the creation of a medicine for humans in 4-5 years.

She talked about whether "there is abstract knowledge in the head" on the example of the dispute between rationalists and empiricists; whether the child can master three native languages ​​at the same time; and, which is perhaps especially important for many, how to say more correctly - "I am frendy" or, after all, "I am frend".

Simply put, artificial intelligence mimics the human brain. In approaches to the study of this issue, in addition to mathematical models, Slamer identified the so-called "cognitive architectures", consisting of many independent components.That is, when studying artificial intelligence, the author proposes to move from ineffective general programs to effective and specific programs.

When it was the turn of Ivan Iorsh, PhD in Physics and Mathematics, a researcher at ITMO's Metamaterials Laboratory, the audience learned how to bend a beam of light to make any object completely invisible. A group of scientists led by Ivan are working on the theoretical component of the issue. But the technologists, unfortunately, are still a little late.

Some time ago, Ilya began working at the junction of two sciences, at the time of the birth of a new science - biomechatronics. His speech was listened to with bated breath! Now Ilya and his team are working on a project for a bionic hand prosthesis. And in October 2016, the guys will take part in four of the six types of kibathlon competitions.

Despite all the advances in modern medicine, 9 out of 10 prostheses in the world are cosmetic. Children under 12 suffer the most. There are simply no prostheses for them, because "pleasure" is not cheap, and most importantly, they need to be changed every 4-5 months. The Robotics Group's prostheses, developed under the leadership of Ilya, are already used by four people, three are children under 12 years old, and another 30 people are waiting for their turn. And this is just the beginning!

Everyone was applauded about the same, the winner was chosen by a special machine - a sound level meter. This time Ivan Iorsh deservedly became him. But in fact, everyone wins in the slam - both the speakers and, of course, the audience.

So, perhaps, soon in the lexicon of a modern Petersburger, along with the words "sidreria" or "falafel", "science-slam" will surely be included …
