General Dynamics Electric Boat was awarded a $ 9.4 billion contract for the construction and testing of a lead and second nuclear powered Columbia-class submarine.

Strategic submarines are the backbone of the American nuclear triad. That is why the increased attention of the Pentagon is always riveted to them. General Dynamics' shipyard Electric Boat has now announced that it has won a major contract for the construction of two next-generation strategic submarines.

The amount of the agreement was $ 9.4 billion. It involves the construction and testing of the lead and second ships of the Columbia class, as well as related support.

Electric Boat is the general contractor for the Columbia program. The new submarine is expected to replace the aging Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines. Construction of four of the six "supermodules" will take place at the Electric Boat facility in Quonset Point. The modules will then be transported by barge to the final assembly site in Groton, Connecticut. There the components will be assembled into a single structure.

With a length of 560 feet (170 meters) and a displacement of approximately 21,000 tons, the Columbia-class submarines will be the largest submarine ever built by the United States, Naval News notes. It is assumed that the lead ship will be delivered to the US Navy in 2027. In total, they intend to build 12 new generation strategic submarines.

It is noteworthy that the new boat will carry fewer ballistic missiles than its predecessor, the Ohio-class submarine mentioned above. While the latter carries 24 Trident D5 missiles, in the case of Columbia, their number will be limited to 16. Higher (in comparison with the old boat) capabilities will provide, among other things, due to a significant reduction in the noise level.

In addition to the new strategic submarine, the Americans want to get a new multipurpose submarine in the future. Recently, some details of its concept have been revealed. According to USNI News, the promising nuclear submarine should be noticeably wider than the Virginia submarine, which will bring it closer in size to the Seawolf submarine. The multipurpose boat of the future may be based on technical solutions applied on the Columbia submarine.

As a reminder, in 2017, Russia launched its most advanced multipurpose nuclear submarine, the K-561 Kazan. She can replenish the fleet by the end of 2020.
