So that humanity does not turn out to be unprepared for the Apocalypse, scientists are already proposing to engage in the colonization of Mars. In May 2015, the American space agency NASA announced a competition to design Martian habitats using 3D printing. NASA hopes to find, during the competition, ways to build and repair housing for astronauts without resorting to a constant supply of building materials from Earth. The prize fund of the competition is $ 2.25 million. The first stage started on May 16, 2015 and will end on September 27. Participants must submit architectural designs for buildings that can be 3D printed using local materials. The winner will receive a prize of $ 50,000. Now the US space agency has selected the 30 best "homes on Mars".

"A unique 3D printing technique uses the physics of water and its phase transition to build an ice house," the contestants say.

In the project proposed by the LeeLabs team, the astronauts will have to print a large hard shell that will enclose and protect the buildings, making it possible to create a base in different geographic conditions. In addition, this approach is intended to facilitate future housing growth in a Mars settlement, as the outer shell can be extended and adjusted.
