The auto industry of the USSR is causing a mixed reaction. Meanwhile, the Soviet era showed the world a number of very unusual and amazing cars. And today we will talk about the original Soviet models from different eras.

ZIL "Cheburashka"

This name is the best fit for this funny, as if "sprawled" mini-truck on the road. It looks very unusual - like a kind of lowrider among trucks. At different times, several generations of Cheburashkas appeared. The first was carried out on the basis of an armored vehicle of the highest class ZIS-115, and the well-deserved ZIL-157 became the "donor" of the cabin.

But why did you need such a car? The fact is that during the tests of government limousines, a truck was needed that could carry the fuel they need for the cars being tested, and it had to go pretty fast in order to keep up. "Cheburashka" was quite suitable for this purpose: the truck could develop a huge (as for a truck) 120 km / h. But that was only the beginning. The first generation was followed by the second, and then the third and fourth. These cars were made on the basis of ZIL-114, ZIL-4104, ZIL-41041, respectively. "Cheburashka" never became serial, but they were remembered by everyone who saw them.

ZIS-112

"Cyclops" - this is how this amazing car was nicknamed. Before us is a sports car, produced in 1951 by the Likhachev plant and underwent a number of modifications. The ZIS-112 is the first specially designed large-class sports car in the USSR. It replaced the ZIS-101A-Sport and roadsters built on the basis of the ZIS-102 and ZIS-110. A distinctive feature of the car is one large headlight in the middle: this gives the car a mesmerizing futuristic look. The source of inspiration for Soviet engineers was the American Le Saber - another amazing creation from the world of the automotive industry.

At first, the creators used the ZIS-110 serial eight-cylinder engine for the ZIS-112, which produced 140 hp. with. Then it was replaced by an experimental 180 hp engine. sec., which allowed the car to accelerate to 200 km / h. In 1956, the second modification appeared - ZIL-112/2. And then three more cars saw the light: ZIL-112/3, ZIL-112/4 and ZIL-112/5. Due to the installation of more powerful engines, it was possible to increase the "maximum speed" to 250 km / h. Alas, none of these original cars has survived to our time.

IMZ-NAMI A50 "Squirrel"

"Belka" is an experimental small-sized car, which was created by the designers of the NAMI Institute together with the Irbit Motorcycle Plant. The goal was to create a cheap people's car, which, among other things, would be useful to disabled people of the Second World War. The car looks very original: you will not immediately understand where its butt is, and where it is in front. For access to the front seat, the front door served, and to the passenger compartment - the side door on the right. In total, the car could accommodate four passengers, and the engine was based on the M-72 motorcycle engine. The car did not go into production, only five units were built.

AZLK-2144 "Istra"

In the second half of the 80s, AZLK developed a very unusual car with an intriguing appearance. The car boasted a number of unusual solutions. The car, in particular, was equipped with a duralumin body without a central pillar. AZLK-2144 "Istra" received two huge doors opening vertically upwards. The car was equipped with a night vision device. "Istra" had a futuristic and at the same time minimalist interior that attracted attention. Hidden under the hood of the car was an Elsbett 3-cylinder multi-fuel turbodiesel. It was supposed to use diesel fuel made on the basis of rapeseed oil.The car could reach a maximum speed of 185 km / h, and the AZLK-2144 accelerated to "hundred parts" in 12 seconds. The car has never been mass-produced, AZLK built only one demonstration model.

Pangolina

In the USSR, there were enough skilled car enthusiasts who could build an amazing car on their own. A real monument to folk art is Pangolina, created by Alexander Kulygin. By the time Kulygin (an engineer by training) started building a sports car, he already had a lot of experience behind him. In 1979, for example, he created the Ukhta six-wheeled all-terrain vehicle.

For his new creation - "Pangolins" - the engineer used a "kopeck" engine with a capacity of only 62 liters. with. However, thanks to its good aerodynamics, Pangolina could develop 180 km / h. She had a body a la "station wagon", the engine was located in front of the car. In general, the car was distinguished by a number of unusual solutions. So, instead of the usual doors, he received a "cap" rising up. The headlights were hidden in the "bowels" of the car, and instead of mirrors there was a special rear-view periscope. But, perhaps, the most attractive thing about this car was its minimalist aggressive appearance with chopped shapes: this made Pangolin in common with the famous Lamborghini Countach.

US-0284 "Debut"

The debut of this somewhat unusual car took place in 1987. It was created by the designers of the NAMI Automotive Institute. According to the classification of Soviet times, the novelty was held as a car of "especially small class". The car was really small: the length was 3685 mm and the width was 1550 mm. However, it attracted attention not only for its size. NAMI-0284 received an original body with good aerodynamics (drag coefficient was only 0.23). Under the hood was an Oka engine, and a later version, Debut-2, was equipped with a MeMZ-245 engine from Tavria. The car received an electric vacuum clutch, as well as a cruise control system. In general, the car looked promising for its time, but it never went into production. So "Debut" will forever remain a concept car. On the other hand, under the influence of NAMI-0284, the prototype ZAZ-1106 was created. The mini-car NAMI-0288 "Compact" has become a kind of heir to "Debut".
