Science is the engine of progress. It is also an inspiration for authors of books, films and TV series. In this cold and dark season, we have prepared a small selection of interesting TV series for you.
To get carried away with science, you do not have to watch documentaries and films about scientists, discoveries and secrets of nature all the time. Man is a creative being, he always drew inspiration from what is happening around him.
The editorial staff of Naked Science offers its own list of interesting TV series related to science in one way or another - from the so-called hard science fiction to sitcoms.
The First (2018- …)
The First is one of the most recent projects on the Hulu streaming service. If you love science fiction, as close to reality as possible, then you will definitely like it. The plot is built around people preparing for a flight to Mars in the not so far away from us in 2033. What could be more realistic in the context of space research, when just the other day the InSight probe landed on the Red Planet, and Elon Musk and SpaceX are preparing their most ambitious BFR project (now Starship)? By the way, the main role in the series is played by Sean Penn, well known for his dramatic acting. So, if you are interested in science fiction about the near future in conditions as close as possible to modern realities, then be sure to pay attention to "The First".
"Wanderers" (Planetes, プ ラ ネ テ ス, 2003-2004)
Perhaps this will surprise someone, but now we will focus on the anime series. "Wanderers" is no less believable work than the series described above. What is its peculiarity? The Wanderers - which, by the way, are drawn and filmed from the manga of the same name - tells the story of a corporation engaged in the removal of space debris in low-Earth orbit. These are spent rocket stages, and failed satellites, and parts with tools lost by astronauts during their spacewalk, and debris from various kinds of collisions. Someone may even say that this is one of the most important problems associated with space exploration today, since orbital debris poses a serious danger both for people in orbit and for spacecraft that help to study the Universe and the Earth as well.
"Mars" (Mars, 2016- …)
Like The Firsts, Mars is about the colonization of Mars (oddly enough). However, there is a fundamental difference between the two projects. “Mars” is about people who have already arrived on the Red Planet and are now trying to master it. Interestingly, as in the First Ones, the events unfold in 2033. Among other things, the project is interesting for its competent combination of documentary and fictional segments. Elon Musk, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, and Andy Weir (the author of the bestselling novel The Martian, based on which Ridley Scott directed the film of the same name with Matt Damon in the title role), appear here. You will learn about what, according to the authors, awaits humanity on Mars by watching the series "Mars".
"Space" (The Expanse, 2015- …)
The series "Space" is considered by some to be the best "hard" science fiction of recent years, as well as the cycle of James Corey's novels of the same name, on the basis of which this project is based. Unlike the above-described series, the plot of "Space" unfolds in the XXIII century. Humanity has colonized Mars, the asteroid belt and even several satellites of Jupiter and, as it happens, divided into earthlings, Martians and asteroids. Some even call this series "Game of Thrones" in science fiction: there are political conspiracies, and battles, and betrayal, and victims. It is worth paying special attention to the fact that, despite the fantastic component of the project, the creators tried to convey many scientific aspects as accurately as possible (like the Coriolis effect, when one of the characters pours himself whiskey on Ceres).
"Regenesis" (ReGenesis, 2004-2008)
By the way, speaking about the future and everything that it brings to all of us. The series "Regenesis" is just about him. In the center of the plot - the organization NorBAC, which is engaged in researching controversial issues related to biotechnology. Of course, where without political conspiracies, corrupt pharmaceutical corporations and the like - all this is in "Regenesis". Although not a very optimistic, but quite plausible view of the future of biotechnology.
Westworld (2016- …)
Speaking of science fiction, the topic of artificial intelligence cannot be ignored. Westworld has become one of the most ambitious and controversial science fiction series in recent years. If you are interested in the topic of AI, but for some reason you are hearing about this project for the first time, you should definitely pay attention to it. In addition to a great cast, Westworld offers some pressing questions about where the machine ends and the mind begins. How long is a robot just an object? What makes a person a person and how important is his consciousness, memory, reason? This is a very tough, sometimes uncompromising, but laudable project.
Firefly is considered a modern classic of sci-fi television series. Its action takes place in the distant future: the Earth is overpopulated, people are exploring space, colonizing it - in general, everything that comes with such a setting. Spectators set off on an adventure together with the crew of the Firefly-class Serenity - charismatic and lively characters, each with their own history, joys and worries. Space travel, intrigue, catchy music and great dialogues - perhaps this is all that made Firefly a cult, despite the fact that it has only 14 episodes (and in 2005 Universal Studios shot the feature film Mission Serenity, in which ended the story of "Firefly").
Altered Carbon (2018- …)
Where are we without cyberpunk? The action of "Altered Carbon" takes place in the XXVII century. Human consciousness is stored on special carriers, from which it is loaded into bodies, if the need arises. Bodies, in turn, are considered nothing more than vessels for consciousness. In the center of the plot - Takeshi Kovacs performed by Yuel Kinnaman, famous for the series "House of Cards" and the remake of "Robocop". Kovacs is a brutal mercenary and political operative whose body was destroyed 250 years before subsequent events. Now he must investigate the murder of the man who "woke him up" - all this in return for a new life.
Star Trek: The Original Series (1966-1969)
The original Star Trek, or Star Trek, of the late 1960s hardly needs an introduction. But for the sake of fairness, we will still give a short information. Captain James Kirk, played by the inimitable William Shatner, Commander Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy (who died on February 27, 2015), and the rest of the crew of the Spaceship Enterprise travel through space, encounter alien races and save the Milky Way from many dangers.
The Big Bang Theory (2007- …)
Today, if not everyone, then almost everyone who is interested in modern TV series, superhero comics and, surprisingly, science, knows about The Big Bang Theory. In the center of the plot - four scientists working at Caltech (California Institute of Technology). Despite their sharp mind and talent, it is sometimes quite difficult for them to cope with ordinary everyday problems, which is why various curious situations arise. But since this is a sitcom about hapless scientists, the creators of the series settled Penny opposite the main characters - a charming blonde who adds even more questions to their lives, and science is unlikely to help them with this.
