In Russia, they decided to postpone the Luna-25 mission to 2022, which should open a new chapter in the study by Roscosmos of the natural satellite of our planet.

Luna-25 will not be launched this year, as previously planned. According to the vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, academician Yuri Balega, the space department decided to postpone the scientific mission from 2021 to May next year.

“This year Luna-25 will not fly. There is too little time to complete the preparation of the apparatus, " quoted Balega as saying. These data were confirmed by Academician Mikhail Marov, who worked on the interplanetary missions of the USSR.

The launch of the apparatus was repeatedly postponed due to Western sanctions and technical problems. A few years ago, October 2021 was determined as the start date, but information about a possible postponement appeared even before the onset of autumn.

In early June, the head of the space department, Dmitry Rogozin, said that the launch could be postponed. According to him, the degree of readiness is influenced primarily by the supply of the necessary equipment, which is to be integrated into the apparatus.

At the time of the announcement, October 1 was still considered the main date. Now, as far as can be judged, these plans have finally disappeared into oblivion.


Luna-25 is to be launched from Vostochny. Soyuz-2.1b was chosen as the carrier. The main task of the mission is to develop a soft landing.

Structurally, the apparatus includes two parts. The upper one is a leaky instrument compartment. It consists of a solar panel, a radiator for a thermal control system, scientific instruments, an energy source, and the station's electronic equipment.

The lower part is a landing gear. It received shock-absorbing landing supports that allow for a soft touch with the surface. The lander is equipped with a propulsion system, with the help of which they will perform the correction of the flight path to the Moon and deceleration during deorbiting and descent. On the lower part, fuel tanks, sensors, antennas and a manipulator of a soil intake device were installed.

Earlier it became known that Luna-25 could become part of the first stage of creating a promising Russian-Chinese station. In fact, its construction (if, of course, an ambitious project gets to this stage) will begin in the second half of the decade.
