As it became known, in 2024 the RFNC-VNIIEF institute should create a prototype of the equipment that can be used for space laser communication. They want to conduct an experiment in the same year. Some of the equipment will be installed on the Progress cargo spacecraft, and the other on the International Space Station.

The work is being carried out by order of Energia. It is assumed that in the future in this way it will be possible to transmit information from the Earth to artificial satellites. Now RFNC-VNIIEF is finishing work on the design documentation, which is needed to create prototypes.

The RFNC-VNIIEF Institute is a scientific and industrial enterprise that is part of Rosatom. It is mainly engaged in the development and production of nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, NASA back in 2014 successfully tested a laser space communication system with the ISS. The experiment lasted 148 seconds: it was possible to transfer several copies of the video.
